Spring Division
Spring is the time to divide the perennials that flower in autumn and late summer.
For the best results, for the lushest growth and blooms, the wise Old Almanac calmly demands what would be cruelty, had flowers any feelings.
Do flowers have feelings?
Some divisions are difficult. Go after the phlox and silver artemisia with an ax, if your spade won't do. Yes! If you love it - if you want it to grow - "go after it with an ax."
Imagine that.
And, pertaining to division of delphinium (which, if loved and cared for correctly will thrive and be so achingly blue you'll somehow feel the color in the back of your eyes): Take away its babies, and replant them, and then - of course - "discard the old hard heart."
Discard the old hard heart.
Ah, well.
Perhaps that’s not so cruel, after all.
